lahznimmo architects were appointed through a short listed competition process for the Dubbo Macquarie River Events Precinct project. The project provides performance facilities and services to support a variety of scales and types of performances and events from local community, through regional, national and international performances for up to 10,000 people.
Key components of the brief include, a covered performance stage with large vehicle access and an amenities support building with a green room, control room, toilets and storage.
Located on the banks of the Macquarie River the project site is subject to frequent flood inundation and the project has been carefully designed to withstand these events with minimal damage and maintenance.
Whilst seeking to create a “state of the art” event arena the design seeks to create an integrated landscape driven solution rather than a building seen in the round and draws heavily on a sense of place for its expression and colour palette. The siting and gentle arc of the form of the stage seeks to improve the connection from the CBD to the river and creates a new Gateway to the foreshore.
The design includes a variety of scaled spaces that allow for a range of uses from day to day to ensure the precinct is as vital and activated by the general public as it is by performances. The siting strategy, which offsets the amenities building creates a stage open on both sides allowing the landscape to flow through the structure and setting up the potential for smaller more intimate performances to one side and larger events to the other.
