The brief for this commercial project included the provision of specialist spaces for the care and sale of cats for a charity organization concerned with their welfare.
The existing terrace layout was restrictive and poorly ventilated, and lacked clear distinction between animal and staff-related spaces. The proposal included substantial alterations to an existing terrace building to provide direct natural light and ventilation to the site, by introducing a large central courtyard. Circulation occurs around this courtyard, providing sun and air along the public route, and providing play areas for the informal interaction between cats, the public, and the volunteer staff.
New staff amenities open up to a rooftop terrace allowing flexibility for charity functions, meetings and daily staff recreation.
The courtyard also both divides and integrates the old and contemporary sections of the building, which is located in a conservation zone in Marrickville. The front of the building restores and completes the existing Enmore Road streetscape whilst the rear façade responds to the tougher environs of the inner city laneway.
