lahznimmo architects where one of four firms invited by the University of Technology, Sydney to submit a design tender for a new University Union Function Centre. The proposed site was on the rooftop of the UTS Building 10, a dramatic and unique site, providing an opportunity to develop a site specific and iconic architectural solution. In generating our proposal we started from first principles with a simple roof plane. This roof plane is then modified to reinforce the corners as suggested by Council envelope controls. Following this it begins to be informed by the site and context pulling up and opening out to the north east views and orientation, as well as responding to the atrium with a rhythmic roof of alternating tilting planes. Planes tilting up to the north allow sightlines to the sky from the atrium as well as maintaining winter solar access into the atrium space. Planes tilting up to the south allow southern light into the function centre space. The internal function spaces are then informed by the alternating tilting planes to create a series of coffered spaces.
