The brief for this project was to replace the existing dilapidated Tamarama Kiosk and also provide a new services building to accommodate Council maintenance, lifeguards and Tamarama Surf Club operational and storage requirements. Tamarama beach provides a unique site for a kiosk, with striking ocean and beach views in addition to a dramatic sandstone escarpment which wraps around the beach and park. The design approach was to provide accommodation which sat back quietly against the landscape and became a backdrop to the varied activities of the park and beach.Designed as linear elements the buildings form an edge to the landscape and reinforce the existing pedestrian pathways and beach promenade. Given the public nature of the building, and its location in an exposed and harsh coastal environment, stable and robust materials such as precast concrete have been selected to minimize on going maintenance and repair over the life span of the building.
