lahznimmo Architects were engaged to prepare a Master Planning Study of the first and largest building at the UNSW Kensington Campus – the Old Main Building. Two of the important outcomes of this study were a commitment to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles and to landscape the existing north facing services courtyard at the western end of the building for the benefit of users. To achieve these outcomes, a new delivery and utility building named the South West Receiving Point needed to be created at the meeting of the Old Main Building and the Newton Building. This new building houses and collects together the displaced activities from the courtyard. lahznimmo architects were then engaged to design the new building as an infill structure to complete the corner junction of the two existing buildings. The functional building brief was essentially utilitarian in nature, but the building has an important urban design role to play at a very public location on campus.
