lahznimmo architects and Wilson Architects were awarded the commission for the new Lowy Cancer Research Centre at the University of NSW through a short listed paid competition process. This Research Facility is a joint venture between the University of NSW, Faculty of Medicine and the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA), bringing together childhood and adult cancer research on the one site. The competition winning scheme proposed a number of responses to the competition brief for a facility of 11,350sqm for a budget of $50mil. The final brief and current design which evolved out of the competition scheme has become a facility of 17,000sqm with a budget $100mil accommodating more than 400 researchers and support staff over eight levels. The building is located in a very prominent location at the NE corner of the Kensington campus.
