Moving across the grain of the Liverpool CBD the pedestrian is also introduced to the system of service laneways, which run parallel to main streets. These service laneways are edgy, chaotic, tough environments, which interrupt the flow of pedestrian movement through the arcade system. The Covering Structures need to achieve and respond to several key issues:
• They need to provide a sense of continuity through the arcade system.
• Be legible in the chaotic laneway environment.
• Reflect the finer, more diverse and colourful grain of the Arcade system.
We have used these ideas as a springing point for our concept design, which has been developed as a flexible and organic “kit of parts”. This “kit of parts” can move across, over and up as required to provide essential connections across the laneways, whilst being respectful to the surrounding built environment. The surface of the canopy has been broken down into a series of standardised trapezoid and rectilinear panels.
