The project involved the refurbishment of the existing Sydney Visitors Centre (SVC) located within the original “Sailors Home”, 106-8 George Street, The Rocks. The Sailor’s Home was built in two stages, the first being three storeys over a basement circa 1860 and the second being a three storey extension to the George Street frontage in the 1920’s. lahznimmo architects were engaged by the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority (SHFA) to provide masterplanning and concept design services for a redesign of how the Sydney Visitor’s Centre occupied the building. The projects primary aims were to create a more contemporary and legible experience for visitors as well as a more efficient and comfortable workplace for staff within the confines of the building’s historic fabric. The brief for the project incorporated: ground floor retail, information space and café; first floor booking service and internet lounge and a second floor interactive historic exhibition.
