The brief for the project was to design a new Café and Amenities Building in addition to a Community Garden Facility within the Blacktown Showground and Francis Park Redevelopment - a new public recreation space near Blacktown CBD. The site for the Café sits on the Central Plaza adjacent to a formal Promenade through the site and overhangs a revitalized natural water course and riparian corridor. The Community Garden Building sits further to the west addressing and servicing the Community Garden allotments. The Café building comprises a lightweight glazed box element and generous covered outdoor area for dining that is juxtaposed with a more solid masonry element housing site services, kitchen and public amenities. The two elements are contained within a simple linear structure with an exposed portal frame. The masonry element is wrapped in a “green” screen consisting of powder coated aluminium angles and flats. This screen is taken around to the promenade elevation creating a ribbon of shading. The screen provides a cohesive urban image for the building as well as a protective and textured layer in an exposed environment. The Gold Coast City Council engaged lahznimmo architects in association with Complete Urban to design the Helensvale Branch Library and Community Cultural Youth Centre in early 2010. The new facility is to replace an existing library and includes a 2,400m2 Library and 1,500m2 Community Centre, along with regional Council rates offices and Councillor’s offices. This is to be a new type of facility for the Council that combined both a library and youth centre in a single project. The challenge was to find a strategy that would draw out the synergies between the two functions and have mutual benefit for both. The design wraps the functions around a shared indoor Plaza called the ‘Neighbourhood Room’, which acts as an extension of the adjacent public plaza. It is an unprogrammed space that acts as entry and address for each of the building functions, whilst vertically linking the three levels. lahznimmo architects are working in association with Complete Urban to design the Helensvale Branch Library and CCYC. lahznimmo architects and Wilson Architects are working in association on the expansion of the Wallace Wurth Building for the Faculty of Medicine and Kirby Institute at UNSW. The project realises Stage Two of the Biomedical Research Precinct following the recently completed Lowy Cancer Research Centre also by lahznimmo architects and Wilson Architects. The building houses three main types of activities: undergraduate teaching, wet research laboratories and dry research office space. The facade responds to the program within, generating complementary yet different architectural expressions. The Wallace Wurth Building sits on a prominent corner of the campus and creates a cohesive relationship with the adjacent Lowy Cancer Research Centre by extending the precast language around the corner. The consolidation of the corner as a single architectural expression creates a landmark corner building to the campus.
